This document provides supporting information for the main article. The first sections provide additional details on the simulations (S1, S2), phylogeographic reconstruction (S3) and evaluation (S4) in the main simulation study. Further we include results of additional experiments (S5), a sensitivity analysis (S6), a detailed explanation of the descriptive statistics used in the discussion of the main paper (S7) and a figure, illustrating the effect of missing first clades on the reconstruction (S8).
