Transverse cross sections of vertebrae segmentations from a (a) common thresher, (b) white, (c) porbeagle, and (d) shortfin mako shark. From a visual comparison only, the thresher shark centrum appears to have substantially more lamellae and nodes than the other three lamniform species. All vertebrae are taken from the anterior body of adult specimens.
