(A) The ‘free exploratory paradigm’ consisting of an arena (typically 30×20×20 cm) subdivided into six equal compartments with small interconnecting doors. The removal of a dividing barrier (depicted by the centre gray line) allows test subjects to move among familiar compartments with bedding vs. empty novel compartments [image adapted from Matos et al. [1]]. (B) The ‘elevated plus maze’ consists of four arms, two of which are enclosed by walls (typically 30 cm high) vs. two that lack walls. The base of the maze is elevated above the floor (typically by 50 cm) [image adapted from Walf and Frye [2]].
