Diagram illustrating the experimental design used. Boxes with a red outline indicate high background risk (HR) (e.g. cues from high background risk individuals, or high-risk individuals themselves), while boxes in blue indicate low background risk (LR). The circle-shaped cue represents undisturbed cue (UC) taken from tadpoles after 10 minutes without disturbance, while the star-shaped cue represents disturbance cues (DC) extracted by chasing individuals using a glass rod for 1 minute. Tadpoles were either used for cue extraction or tested once and were subsequently removed from the experiment.
